Summer Reading Program

Make a Splash!...READ.  From June 1st to August 15th.  For all ages up to 18.  Visit any Live Oak Public Libraries branch and pick up your reading log to get started!  Keep track of your reading & receive rewards.  You'll also be eligible for prize drawings.  View Flyers.  Also, get your own library card!

Savannah Promise Neighborhood

The Promise Neighborhood planning grant has been submitted.  Announcements will be made in September for funded sites.  We THANK YOU ALL for the tremendous work that has taken place to move us closer to the realization of the Savannah Promise Neighborhood!  


The Savannah Promise Neighborhood (SPN) will be an early childhood development and education initiative. View the Rotary-Kiwanis Clubs white paper on Early Childhood Education that will have elements incorporated into the SPN white paper for the proposed target area.   • Savannah Promise Neighborhood Oversight Committee will meet on Friday, July 30, at 8:30 a.m. at the Chatham County Health Department (Eisenhower Drive) in the Training Room.

YFA Receives School Health Clinic Grant

YFA was notified by the Emory University Department of Pediatrics that it was a recipient of a Comprehensive School-Based Health Clinic grant.  This planning grant will help in the implementation of a school-based health clinic that will probably be placed in an elementary school in the Savannah Promise Neighborhood area.

Evaluation

Description: Using technical advisers and staff, prepares and recommends a plan for evaluating the strategies and programs recommended in the Authority’s comprehensive plan for children and youth.   Conducts the evaluation and reports the results back to the Authority.  Monitors the performance of the contracts entered in by the Authority.

Planning & Budget

Description: Develops and amends a proposed comprehensive plan taking into consideration the findings of the evaluation committee.  Monitors results of the various strategies being implemented.  Reviews the annual proposed budget and work plan and submits its contents and recommendations to the Authority.

Public Information & Advocacy

Description: Develops and recommends a plan to the Authority for informing the community about the local conditions of children and youth.  Communicates to the public about the work of the Authority, the objectives it seeks to achieve, and the results that are being achieved.  Develops a plan to the Authority for seeking legislation, policies, and state and local budget appropriations to protect and improve the well-being of children and youth in the community.  Provides speakers from the committee to appear before civic groups and organizations in the community to inform them about the condition of children and youth in the community and the efforts being made to address these issues.  Carries out other duties as the Authority may assign.

Child Health and the Continuum of Care

Description: Using national research and best practices information, analyzes and expands the Continuum of Care as it relates to child health.  Possible future strategies include: Improving communication and accessibility with parents; improving coordination of services; expanding promising practices; developing a prevention council; and promoting supporting legislation.

Ensuring Educational Success

Description: Analyzes and expands the Continuum of Care as it relates to educational success for our children.  This involves the interaction of community services with the Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS).  Possible future strategies include: Improving coordination of services with community programs and the SCCPSS; expanding promising practices; and promoting supporting legislation.

Nomination & Board Development

Description: Proposes nominees for all elected officers for elections at the annual meeting in December and for members who are to be appointed to the Authority by the Authority. Conducts orientation for new members and on-going training and development for all board members.  The committee is responsible for ensuring that the appointing bodies are kept abreast of their appointees’ active involvement through committee work, attendance at various Authority meetings and events, and support of YFA’s priorities.
