The Chatham-Savannah Youth Futures Authority was created in 1987 through the Georgia General Assembly. It was legislated to serve as the collaborative body (Authority) for Chatham County to implement the plan of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s New Futures Initiative (NFI). This initiative focused on ways to address the at-risk youth population in the local public school system, and to reduce the incidents of school failure, teen pregnancy, and youth unemployment and inactivity in the community. Transitioning after the NFI, the Authority broadened its scope to involve families and the community in its efforts.
The Authority consists of representation from the City of Savannah, Chatham County, Savannah Chatham County Public School System, State Superintendent of Education, Georgia Commissioner of Department of Human Resources, Georgia Commissioner of Labor, Chatham County Legislative Delegation, the Youth Futures Authority, local businesses, the faith community, and from over 50 health and human service organizations with a focus on children, youth, and families.
